| The Joy of Horse Therapy |
My favorite time of the week is Friday afternoon because I volunteer at "One Step Closer Therapy Riding" (OSCTR), a non-profit in south San Jose where children with special needs learn to ride horses. While learning to ride a beautiful, awesome animal, the children build core strength, gain self-confidence and learn to communicate with their horses. Each rider's program is tailored to accommodate their special needs which range from cerebral palsy and autism to developmental delays. As a volunteer "Sidewalker;" I walk beside the rider to ensure they stay on the horse and can safely dismount in an emergency. The lesson is the highlight of the childrens' week and mine too! Weekly joy comes into my life as I share fresh air and "yards of wide smiles" with the children. To learn more go to www.osctr.org |
