When you visit DRB’s offices in San Jose, you will be greeted with several Jestures! No, not gestures, but Jestures—a collection of ceramic sculptures that are the work of Fred Yokel, our Art Director for the past eleven years.
His passion is “work’n clay” and Fred has sculpted a “family” of fun, whimsical characters. Each typically has a small head and exaggerated body—caught in a pose that elicits a humorous or curious caption, which Fred “the local-yokel” is able to provide. Sometimes the caption inspires the Jesture, but mostly the caption emerges as the character takes shape.
“Inspiration for the poses comes from many places--my kids, Yoga, dance, baseball, Cirque du Soleil. I often sketch poses before I begin so I can refine them and also so I don't forget them” says Fred. “There are so many possibilities. Many of the pieces express humor. I like to laugh andbelieve that laughter is therapeutic, so it is actually complimentary for someone to laugh while viewing my work.”
Fred is a prolific artist and his Jestures are featured in several galleries and museums. When he’s not handling our graphics production needs, he’s at his home studio working on his latest creation, or attending art shows and doing guest appearances or workshops at some of the galleries. Many of his pieces have been purchased by home owners, interior decorators and individuals who love and appreciate art with attitude.
